CELEBRITY: Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

Monday, known as Accession Day in the Commonwealth, was the quiet beginning of five months of events for Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family as she celebrates 60 years on the throne.

Traditionally, Accession Day is not celebrated in the United Kingdom, as it marks the passing of the previous monarch. Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne after the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952.

The highlight of her Diamond Jubilee celebration will be a long holiday weekend in the U.K. in early June, when the Queen and the royal family will lead a flotilla of 1,000 boats on the River Thames. Sir Paul McCartney will headline a concert performed in front of Buckingham Palace the same weekend.
